Devices used in the ASR™ XL Acetabular System and the DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing Platform (the ASR™ Hip Implant) by DePuy Orthopedics, Inc., its parent company, Johnson & Johnson, Inc. and Ceram Tec Ag, who may have manufactured components for the ASR™ Hip Implant.

Lawsuits are being filed against DePuy Orthopedics, Inc., and its parent company, Johnson & Johnson, Inc. on behalf of the ASR™ Hip Implant recall victims for designing, manufacturing, and selling an allegedly defective hip implant. The design of the ASR™ Hip Implant is such that metal makes direct contact with metal in the implant, and over time the filings created by wear can trigger painful inflammation and cause damage to tissue and muscle in the vicinity of the implant. DePuy was made aware of these problems as of early 2008 but has been slow to respond to the problems linked with the shallowness of the hip replacement cup and difficulties in implantation. Finally, in December 2009, DePuy stopped selling the ASR™ Hip Implant in Australia as of December 2009 and in March 2010, submitted an Urgent Safety Notice to doctors in the U.S. from further utilizing the ASR™ Hip Implant.
